The first arrival of Paul at Corinth and his appearance before the proconsul Gallio are mentioned in Acts 18:1–18. Fragments of an inscribed stone found in this century at Delphi in Greece permit us to date the probable service of Gallio as spanning the period from the summer of A.D. 51 through the summer of A.D. 52. The stone dates an order of the emperor Claudius and refers to Gallio as the proconsul of Achaia.2 We do not know with certainty the time of Paul’s appearance before Gallio, but
